FAQ's in: Library Policies

We accept donations of materials. As many used items are not appropriate for inclusion in the library’s collection because of age, condition or duplication of materials already owned, the head librarians or their designee at each location will determine the acceptability of any donations for the Greene County Public Library.

We reserve the right to refuse any donations.

We do not assess the value of donations or gifts. Upon request, a receipt verifying the number of items donated will be provided.

Donations that are not added to the library collection are either given to the Friends group for sale at that location or sold by the Greene County Public Library in an ongoing or annual sale.

Other places in the community that may accept book donations include the Goodwill Easter Seals Miami Valley or The Salvation Army.

All Greene County libraries are closed in all departments on the following holidays:

  • New Year’s Day
  • Martin Luther King, Jr. Day
  • Memorial Day
  • Easter Sunday
  • Independence Day
  • Labor Day
  • Thanksgiving Day
  • Christmas Eve
  • Christmas Day

When any of the above holidays other than Easter falls on a Sunday, the library is closed on the following Monday.

All Greene County community libraries will close at 5:30 p.m. on New Year’s Eve and on the Wednesday before Thanksgiving.

Yes, the library may close or delay opening due to inclement weather or power outage. Closing information is posted to our website, Facebook Page, Twitter, and local television news stations.

If the library closes for the weather, due dates are backdated on the next day the library opens. Items are not due and no fines accrue on days when the library closes for inclement weather.

The Internet Access Priorities Statement

The Greene County Public Library is committed to providing its patrons with computer equipment and software necessary to completely fulfill all customer expectations with respect to the primary mission and functions of the Greene County Public Library. In this regard it our strongest priority to support and maintain the Library Webpage, the on-line catalog, and access to all other electronic reference data bases and software available on its computers.

In fulfilling our primary mission, the Greene County Public Library also maintains and makes available Internet access which a customer may utilize to access other Internet sites not directly related to the Library’s primary mission. While the Library and its staff are committed to making such access available, the Library cannot guarantee patron satisfaction in accessing these other sites with the same commitment and support provided to the delivery of our primary services.

Wireless Internet access is provided for Greene County Public Library patrons and guests. To access the Internet via wireless connection patrons must have a GCPL Library Card number. Guests may either obtain a library card or request a temporary library card number. There is no cost for this service. Printing is not available. Patrons are responsible for providing and configuring their own wireless equipment.

Therefore patrons utilizing these available ancillary services should do so with the knowledge and understanding that our staff must prioritize all customer requests for assistance within these parameters. A patron’s experience with web sites may vary and may be beyond the control of the Greene County Public Library and its staff.

Greene County Public Library is in compliance with the Children’s Internet Protection Act (CIPA). To the extent practical, technology protection measures (or ―Internet Filters‖) shall be used to block or filter Internet, or other forms of electronic communications, access to inappropriate information. Specifically, as required by CIPA, blocking shall be applied to visual depictions of material deemed obscene or child pornography, or to any material deemed harmful to minors.

Subject to staff supervision, technology protection measures may be disabled for adults over 17 upon proof of age or, in the case of minors, minimized only for bona fide research or other lawful purposes.

Acceptable Use Policy

  1. In order to use a workstation at the Greene County Public Library, a patron must
    – Have a current Greene County Public Library card
    – Register to use a workstation
  2. Non-cardholders must contact the librarian on duty for access to a workstation.
  3. The following uses of the Internet at the library are prohibited: illegal purposes, chat,and displaying graphics which may be reasonably construed as obscene.
  4. Users of the public workstations are responsible for their own choices. Parents and guardians are responsible for the use of these resources by their own minor children.
  5. Users of the public workstations shall not: misrepresent themselves as another person; attempt to modify or gain access to files, passwords, or data belonging to others; seek unauthorized access to any computer system; damage or alter software components of any network or database; upload information to a library computer’s hard drive; or modify any library screens or programs.
  6. The sending of any information, including name, address, and credit card numbers, via the Internet is at the sole risk of the user.
  7. The library reserves the right to charge for printing.
  8. Use of the Internet is on a first-come basis. Patrons may use the Internet computer for up to one hour in a session. A patron may have a maximum of two computer sessions per day.
  9. The copyright law of the United States (Title 17 U.S. Code) governs the printing of copyrighted material. The user of the public workstation is liable for any infringement.
  10. Information downloaded from the Internet may contain viruses. The library is not responsible for damage to a patron’s diskette or computer, or for any loss of data, damage, or liability that may occur from use of the library’s computers.
  11. The library reserves the right to end an Internet session at any time.
  12. Misuse of the library’s computers and/or the Internet will result in loss of library computer privileges.
