Atonement, Week 1

Welcome to April's Online Book Club. This month, we're reading Atonement by Ian McEwan.

The Online Book Club, if you've never joined us before, is a book discussion group that takes place entirely online. Each week, I write a new blog post that talks about different aspects of the book, and you can interact directly with me and other readers by leaving your comments. Check back each week and see what new topics we're talking about.

Atonement is the story of the Tallis family and their life right before the beginning of World War II. The youngest Tallis, Briony, makes a choice early in the book, and this choice affects the rest of the family for decades to come. The story moves through World War II and concludes at the end of the 20th century, and each scene and time period is expertly written.

If you want to follow along with us but you aren't interested in reading the book, you can always watch the movie version starring Kiera Knightley. Check out the trailer above if you want to get a feel for the movie. Feel free to still leave comments on the blog posts, even if you're only watching the movie and not reading the book.

This book is split up into three parts, so we're going to read Part 1 for next week. I can't wait to hear your thoughts about Part 1 in the comments section!
