The Housemaid, Week 3

Welcome to Week 3 of the Online Book Club discussion of The Housemaid.

I guess this section answered the question about whether Andrew and Millie were going to stay away from each other. Were you surprised that they got together? I expected them to have an affair, but I was a little surprised by the way it came about. I don't know why either one of them would think that they would be able to go away to a Broadway show and a romantic dinner without succumbing to their feelings. It was even crazier that Millie was wearing one of Nina's old dresses when the affair began. That was just so creepy.

After the romantic getaway, Nina acts really suspicious of Andrew and Millie. Then, she drops the bomb that she knows that Millie spent time in prison. Were you surprised that Nina seemingly knew that all along? Andrew is bothered by the revelation at first but then recovers. Nina also puts the playbill from the Broadway show on Millie's nightstand. She obviously knows about the affair and wants to punish them both, right? After that, Millie is almost arrested at the supermarket. Do you think Nina had a hand in that interaction?

At the end of Part 1, Nina has moved out of the house, and Millie and Andrew are making a go at their relationship. However, Millie finds herself locked in the attic after leaving the books on the coffee table. Were you really curious what was going on when you read that part? Before she goes up there, Enzo makes a point to tell her that she is in danger. How do you think he knew what was going to happen to her?

In Part II, we move to Nina's point of view and begin to get some answers. Nina and Andrew's relationship started off in a very nice way. He rescued her when she was at a low point, and he seemed like a loving and kind man. So, I was absolutely shocked when Andrew first locked Nina in the attic after she forgot to get her hair colored. Did you see that coming? I couldn't believe that he then made her pull out so many hairs as punishment. That was crazy. After that, he stages that whole scene to make it look like Nina put Cecelia in the tub to drown her. I was really surprised that he was so evil. He seemed so incredibly nice and patient in the first part. How could he hide his true nature so effectively?

Obviously, he has locked Millie in the attic as punishment. What do you think he will make her do in there? Do you think she is going to be as easy to control as Nina?

Thinking back about the prologue, do you have any ideas about who the police find in the attic? Is it Millie? Or, is Millie the one talking to police about the attic? What do you think is going on?

Are you interested to read the ending? Do you think you have it all figured out? Do you think we'll ever know what sent Millie to prison when she was younger?

Before you go, check out the interview with stars, Sydney Sweeney and Amanda Seyfried. Do you think they were the perfect casting for this movie?

Thanks for following along again this week! I hope you're excited to finish the book! Let me know in the comments if you saw the twist coming before it happened!
