Types of 3D Printing Filament

Spark Place has several types of filament available to purchase for your 3D printing projects.

  • PLA (Polylactic Acid): A biodegradable, corn-based filament that's durable and easy to use. Great for most 3D prints.
  • PETG (Polyethylene Terephthalate): A thermoplastic that's stronger and more heat resistant than PLA. It's food-safe and recyclable. PETG is a good choice for anything that needs durability, especially outdoors.
  • TPU (Thermoplastic Polyurethane) / NinjaFlex: An extremely flexible material that's resistant to ripping, tearing, and crushing. It's also excellent at reducing vibrations. It's neither recyclable nor biodegradable.

You may also bring your own filament from home, but makerspace staff will need to make sure that it’s compatible with our printers.

Types of Large Format Printer Materials

Spark Place has several types of material available to purchase for your large-format printing projects.

  • Light-Weight Banner: A durable material for creating a sign that can be hung both indoors and outdoors. Grommets are included.
  • Wall Cling: A material with a tacky backing designed to stick to walls without damaging the paint.
  • Sticker Vinyl: Vinyl with an adhesive backing, designed to more permanently adhere to objects.
  • Holographic Sticker Vinyl: Vinyl with a permanent adhesive backing; but rather than white, the base material is a shimmering silver. Available in 28” only.
  • Poster Paper: Thicker than paper, but thinner than cardstock. Easy to frame and mat. Great for printing high-quality photographs.
  • Window Cling: A clear material with a light tack meant to stick to glass. Please note: ANY white in the design MUST be changed to a light grey. The large format printer does NOT have white ink, which is why most base materials are already white. If you do not change your white to grey, that part of the design will be clear/blank. Prints can be inverted to allow text to be read from outside the window while the cling is stuck to the inside. Available in 52" only.
  • Perforated Window Cling: This material allows a viewer to see the print on one side, while the other side is sticky and has minimal visual obstruction. Typically put on the outside of windows so that those who are inside can still see out. This material is one sided and MUST be stuck to the side of the window from which it will be viewed. Available in 52” only.
  • Canvas: This material is gesso-primed canvas that can be hung up, sewed, or stretched over a frame. Spark Place does NOT have equipment for stretching your canvas. Available in 28” only.
