The Book Thief, Week 1

Welcome to November's Online Book Club. This month, we're reading The Book Thief by Markus Zusak.

The Online Book Club, if you've never joined us before, is a book discussion group that takes place entirely online. Each week, I write a new blog post that talks about different aspects of the book, and you can interact directly with me and other readers by leaving your comments. Check back each week and see what new topics we're talking about.

The Book Thief is about a little girl named Liesel who moves in with a foster family in Nazi Germany after she is separated from her mother. Liesel brings with her a book she has stolen, and once her foster father helps her learn to read, Liesel blossoms and becomes a book thief, always looking for another book to read. Told from the perspective of Death, this book is a somber exploration of the Holocaust and the choices and hardships every day people experienced during WWII.

If you want to follow along with us but you aren't interested in reading the book, you can always watch the movie version starring Geoffrey Rush. Check out the trailer above if you want to get a feel for the movie. Feel free to still leave comments on the blog posts, even if you're only watching the movie and not reading the book.

Next week, we'll be reading the first three parts (or the first 170 pages), so make sure to read those before reading the blog post next week. I hope you'll check back for the blog post, and I can't wait to hear from you in the comments section.
