Welcome to Week 3 of the Online Book Club!

We’re still making our way through Wuthering Heights. Did this second section take all of the wind out of your sails, or were you able to make it through?

I think I can just confirm my thoughts from last week and confidently say that Heathcliff is the worst. He is so mean and cruel. His treatment of poor Isabella just confirms my feelings that he is a monster. I felt so sorry for Isabella in this section. She shouldn’t have married Heathcliff in the first place, but I wish she had been able to come back to her brother’s house. She was just a pawn in Heathcliff and Catherine’s game, and I don’t think she deserved the treatment she received.

Were you surprised that Catherine passed away right after giving birth? Do you think that her death was brought on by her heartbreak over Heathcliff?

I was surprised by the fact that Heathcliff wanted Catherine to haunt him for the rest of his life. That was an interesting request, in my opinion. If I were Heathcliff, I would want to move on from my tumultuous relationship with Catherine, and I don’t think I would be able to accomplish that if I were asking her spirit to continue to stay with me.

Catherine’s daughter, Catherine, and Heathcliff’s son, Linton, are sad characters as well. Linton doesn’t deserve to have his father treat him so horribly, and Catherine doesn’t deserve to be toyed with by Heathcliff, either.

Are you with me in thinking that Heathcliff is a horrible character? So far, the only adult character that seems nice at all is Nelly. She appears to really care for the children, but since she is just a servant, she doesn’t really have much control over them.

If you’re struggling to keep up with the story or all of the characters, please take a moment to peruse this website! It’s really interesting, and it offers so much information about the characters, the author, and the story. Please check it out and tell me what you think!

I hope you’re still sticking with the story. Let me know your thoughts—please tell me I’m not alone in not liking Heathcliff at all!

See you next week as we talk about the end of the story.

I have to admit that I really got drawn into this section. I still do not have a favorite character, but I am enjoying the story more.

Isabella was such a pitiful character in this section. I cannot believe she was so deceived by Heathcliff. I wanted her to get as far away from him as she could. She sacrificed so much to be involved in such a horrible relationship.

Heathcliff continues to make me so angry. I don’t trust anything he says. He is so convincing, though. Look what he is doing to Catherine’s daughter. She is another piece in his sick game.

Thanks for the great site. I cannot believe how much information it offers. You are always so good to provide these useful tools.

I cannot believe I am saying this, but I am really anxious to finish this story.

Wow, I can’t believe that you were so drawn into the story this week! That’s great!

Isabella was so sad. It’s too bad that her only purpose was to make Catherine jealous. And, it’s so sad that she wasn’t even able to stay around and enjoy her son.

Heathcliff is such an unlikable character. It surprises me that people mention him as an interesting character from literature so often. He is really a horrible, horrible man. He just toys with everyone.

I’m glad you were able to peruse that site and that it was helpful to you!

Thanks for taking the time to comment again. I’m glad that you are looking forward to reading the end!
