The Online Book Club, in case you’ve never joined us before, is a book discussion group that takes place entirely online. Each week, I write a new blog post that talks about different aspects of the book. You can interact directly with me and other readers by leaving a comment in the comments section. Make sure you check back each week and see what new topics we’re talking about!
The Underdogs is a book that highlights the work of the Xenia-based service dog academy 4 Paws For Ability. 4 Paws provides service dogs for many different types of people. They’ve become particularly well-known for providing service dogs to children who usually can’t get a service animal, like children with breathing tubes or children with autism. The book also delves into the science behind dogs and helps the reader understand why dogs are so important to so many people.
This month is a special month because The Underdogs is this year’s Big Read book. That means that people all over the Miami Valley are reading and talking about the same book. Greene County Public Library will be hosting a series of Big Read programs, including library visits by 4 Paws, book discussions, and special canine-related programs. Please check out the Big Read website to learn more about the Big Read and to see other programs happening in the Miami Valley during March and April.
There’s no movie to accompany the book this month, but Melissa Fay Greene did create a trailer to introduce her book, so I will leave that here. Make sure to check it out if you’re on the fence about whether or not to read the book.
I hope you’ll join us reading this book, and that you’ll check out some of the events around the area.
Make sure to read the first five chapters before our discussion starts on March 12!
