Welcome to a new Online Book Club book and discussion for May. This month, we’re reading The Immortal Life of Henrietta Lacks by Rebecca Skloot.

If you’ve never joined us before, the Online Book Club is a book discussion group that takes place entirely online. Each week, I write a new blog post that talks about different aspects of the book. You can interact directly with me and other readers by leaving a comment in the comments section. Make sure you check back each week and see what new topics we’re talking about!

The Immortal Life of Henrietta Lacks is a true story about a woman whose cancer cells were taken by doctors and then used to do incredible things in the medical community. For years, Henrietta’s family was not aware that her cells her harvested, and they didn’t understand the impact that these cells had on humanity. The book explores the science behind cell harvesting and dives deep into the lives of Henrietta and her family. It’s a great marriage of scientific facts and narrative non-fiction, so it’s really fun and informative to read.

If you want to learn more about the story but don’t want to read the book, check out the movie version. And, please feel free to leave comments on our blog posts, even if you are just watching and not reading this month. I’m going to leave the trailer for the movie release here, just to entice you to follow along with us.

We’ll be discussing section one starting May 14. Make sure to read the first eleven chapters before you check the blog post. I hope to hear from you then!
