Welcome! This month, we’re reading Jon Krakauer’s book, Into the Wild.
The Online Book Club, in case you’ve never joined us before, is a book discussion group that takes place entirely online. Each week, I write a new blog post that talks about different aspects of the book, and you can interact directly with me and other readers by leaving a comment in the comments section. Make sure you check back each week and see what new topics we are talking about!
Into the Wild is the true account of Chris McCandless, a man who journeyed into the wilds of Alaska alone and then was found dead four months later. The book explores Chris’s life and explains what made him embark on such a dangerous adventure.
If you’re not interested in reading this book but still want to contribute to the discussion, feel free to watch the movie version starring Emile Hirsch. You can check out a copy of this movie from your local Greene County Public Library location. Here’s the trailer for the movie, if you’re interested.
You can also check out a really interesting documentary called Return to the Wild on our digital streaming app, Hoopla. The PBS documentary traces Chris’s trip through Alaska and tries to piece together why he chose to leave his family and live a life in the wilderness. Feel free to watch the trailer if you want to put faces to some of the names mentioned in the book.
I hope you’ll be able to read or watch along with us this month. I look forward to hearing from you in the comments. Starting February 13th, I’ll be talking about the first six chapters, so make sure you read that bit before joining us!
